“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10
God’s gift . . .
Cleansing Renewal in the Rain
Rain is grace; rain is the sky descending to the earth;
without rain, there would be no life.
(John Updike)
Do you like rainy days? . . . Sometimes people are gloomier, tired, and “down” when it’s raining . . . But here in parts of Texas, rain actually perks people up . . . Farmers depend on rainwater for their animals and crops, those with allergies appreciate the cleansing of the air . . . and flowers, grass, and trees drink in the nutrients it provides.
“Sing to the Lord with grateful praise; make music to our God on the harp.
He covers the sky with clouds; he supplies the earth with rain
and makes grass grow on the hills.”
Psalm 147:7-8
Rain is vital for sustaining life on Earth . . . it drives the water cycle, and provides necessary water for ecosystems, agriculture, and human use . . . it replenishes water resources like lakes, rivers, and aquifers . . . In agriculture, rain provides the moisture needed for crops to grow, which sustains food production for billions of people around the world . . . Forests and grasslands rely on regular rainfall to maintain ecosystem stability and provide habitats for countless species . . . In urban areas, rain fills reservoirs, making sure that people have water for drinking, sanitation, etc. . . . Rain also helps regulate temperatures, especially in tropical and temperate regions . . . think about how cooling rainfall feels after a long, hot day.
God’s Word is filled with lessons about life . . . Spiritually speaking, the Bible tells us that rain is a sign of God’s blessing on the land.
“The rain and snow come down from the heavens
and stay on the ground to water the earth.
They cause the grain to grow, producing seed for the farmer and bread for the hungry.
It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit.
It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it.”
Isaiah 55:10-11
God sends rain . . . the prophet says the rains “come down from heaven” . . . and seeds sprout, and grow, and eventually produce crops . . . those rains and those crops are the difference between life and death.
God’s Word blesses us in the same way as rain . . . It brings life and freshness to our lives and our world, if we are open to it . . . When God speaks to us, like the rains from heaven or the dew in the morning, we are renewed, refreshed, and ready to begin again.
“ Let my teaching fall on you like rain; let my speech settle like dew.
Let my words fall like rain on tender grass, like gentle showers on young plants.”
Deuteronomy 32:2
When God speaks to us, He gives us what we need to grow, thrive, and succeed . . . Like new grass when it rains . . . as we drink in the Word of God, we become stronger and filled with life.
INSIGHT . . .
God’s Word nurtures us like the rain . . . As I prayed about the rain and God’s Word, He led me in an unexpected direction . . . Following a rabbit trail, I got from rain and God’s provision for us to Psalm 23 . . . and God’s provision for us . . . a Scripture that nurtures, affirms, and assures God’s love for us all.
“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul.
He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me;
your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever”
Psalm 23
Psalm 23 represents a state of mind where we pause, reflect, and then sigh . . . causing us to take a deep breath and remember our Shepherd . . . helping us remember that God is with us always to inspire and encourage us, and give us comfort and help daily.
It is a psalm of trust and hope, assuring us that as believers our Shepherd will lead us safely through all of life’s seasons, from peaceful moments to deep trials, all the way to eternal life, with overflowing goodness and mercy.
These green pastures and still waters provide a peaceful setting, but remember the tranquility and stillness around you doesn’t permeate your soul if your mind is fearful or panicked . . . Rest in God’s Words—take them into your heart . . . God’s peace restores the broken and hurting parts of our souls—the mind, the spirit, and emotions . . . God’s peace comes because He is with us, and we can trust Him.
God wants us to experience His goodness and love . . . He wants to know us, and He wants us to live with Him forever, so seek a relationship with Him, just as He seeks a relationship with us, so that we can know Him too.
INVITATION—TO TALK WITH GOD . . .
“Create in me a clean heart, O God;
and renew a right spirit within me.”
Psalm 51:10
"Renew a right spirit” is a prayer for spiritual cleansing and renewal . . . It is often linked metaphorically to rain as a symbol of God's refreshing grace, cleansing, and life-giving presence in our spiritual lives . . . It shows a heartfelt desire for inner purity, a correct attitude, and a fresh start . . . just like rain replenishes, restores, and refreshes the earth.
The rain symbolizes spiritual renewal, washing away guilt, and bringing new life, just as natural rain nourishes the ground . . .
Rain also represents the Holy Spirit descending to refresh, strengthen, and guide believers, leading to spiritual growth and
joy . . . and rain is seen as a sign of God's mercy, washing away sin and bringing hope.
You can pray these words when asking God for forgiveness, a pure heart, or a renewed perspective within your soul . . . We don’t need God to create a new heart from scratch . . . we already have a heart . . . but we can’t make our heart clean without God . . . God is the only one who can truly make something out of nothing—to renew our spirit—including regenerating, reviving, rebuilding, and replenishing the spiritual joy deep within our hearts and souls.
Talk with God about renewing your heart . . . Do you want God to make you like new?
Is there something you need to let go of to be refreshed . . .
to feel passionate again about your life in Christ?
You are asking God to restore your inner self, creating a pure, steadfast, and obedient heart and mind . . . this is a prayer for deep inner renewal, a fresh start, and the inner strength to live righteously, seeking divine help for true change.
Pray these words, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me” as you talk with God . . . and pray . . .
Lord, I need a clean heart, a fresh start.
I need to be renewed, and only You can make that happen. I want to be right with you.
I want to be able to make decisions that are pleasing to you
and that help me to spread Your word.
I want to live my life for You, Lord. –Amen
“And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing.
Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right,
and pure, and lovely, and admirable.
Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”
Philippians 4:8
ILLUMINATION . . .
Some people walk in the rain; others just get wet.
(Roger Miller)
Rain, rain, go away, come again another day! . . . Do you remember singing that as a child? . . . I used to love singing that—while playing in the rain . . . Yet now adays, we often hear people say, “it’s too wet to go outside.”
Pause for a moment and take yourself back in time, and embrace the puddle . . . Embracing and welcoming the elements can be a joyful and enriching experience for children—and adults . . . Splashing in puddles—think about it . . . There is freedom that comes within your heart and soul when you let yourself “go” and accept what nature has dealt, even for just a few moments.
You and I were once that little kid who fussed because we wanted to be outside in the rain . . . we didn’t care about getting wet or sick . . . we only cared about the happy feeling that came with umbrellas, boots, and fresh water on your face . . . So where did that kid go? . . . We grew up, but somehow our confidence and courage faded instead of growing with us . . . We have more freedom now than we ever had as a child, yet we hold ourselves back more than ever . . . Isn’t it weird? . . . We were braver when we knew less.
Did you know that spending just 20 minutes outdoors helps us to regulate our emotions by significantly reducing our cortisol levels? . . . and that is a good thing . . . Think of cortisol as nature’s built-in alarm system . . . It’s our body’s main stress hormone that works with certain parts of our brain to control our mood, motivation, and fear . . . Cortisol is essential for regulating metabolism, blood pressure, immune function, and the "fight-or-flight" stress response, elevating blood sugar and suppressing non-essential functions . . . Abnormal levels lead to serious health issues . . . so it is a GOOD THING to spend a little time outdoors each day.
When is the last time you intentionally splashed in a puddle?
. . . walked barefoot in the rain?
. . . turned your face upward to the falling drops and let the rain wash the stress away?
Life is full of beauty. Notice it.
Notice the bumble bee, the small child, and the smiling faces.
Smell the rain and feel the wind.
Live your life to the fullest potential.

INSPIRATION—PRAYING THROUGH MUSIC . . .
Music is the mediator between the spiritual and the sensual life.
(Ludwig van Beethoven)
I encourage you to take time to listen to any or all the songs below . . . there is no right or wrong style of music—it is what speaks to you . . . listen to the melody and the lyrics and feel the response of your heart to what God wants you to hear . . . and I do understand that music doesn’t speak to everyone . . . and that is okay too.

INTO EACH DAY AHEAD . . .
Remember that rain is a beautiful symbol in the Bible, representing God’s provision and blessings . . . often illustrating God’s care and promise to nourish our lives, and reminding us of His love and faithfulness . . . Each day embrace the offer of renewal and a fresh start by talking to God, praying through the day, and walking with the confidence that Christ is walking with you.
Heavenly Father,
We are comforted by the words You have given us in Isaiah 40:31:
“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
Lord, we place our hope in You today. Please renew our strength.
When we feel tired or overwhelmed, remind us that You are our source of energy and endurance.
Help us to soar above the difficulties that may come my way,
just like an eagle rises above the storm.
Let Your presence guide us in every decision we make,
and let Your peace fill our hearts in every situation we face.—Amen.
