God’s gift . . .
Jesus, Our Rock & Foundation
“The Lord is my rock, my fortress, my safe place, and my deliverer,
the One who takes me out of trouble. My God is my rock, in whom I am safe.
He is my safe covering, my saving strength, and my strong tower.”
Psalm 18:2
Begin this day by placing Christ at the center of your heart.
When you surrender your worries to Him,
His peace becomes the steady foundation that guides every step you take.
(Rev. Rosemarie Logan Duncan)
Peace, calm, that feeling of serenity doesn’t just happen . . . It depends on so many other things taking place around us . . . Peace is a challenge in the midst of the circumstances of life . . . It is the outcome of a steadfast mind—an unwavering, persistent, dedicated mind . . . and it involves trust—unwavering, persistent, devoted trust . . . the kind of trust we need to place in our Lord.
“Trust in the LORD forever, for the Lord, the Lord Himself, is the Rock eternal.”
Isaiah 26:4
You know, we will never fully trust something or someone that we don’t know . . . Trust comes from knowledge and experience . . . As we begin to get to know a person, we develop a deeper relationship, and trust builds as that bond grows . . . The same is true with God . . . The more we get to know Him, the deeper the trust will be.
Jesus is our Rock, redeemer, and foundation throughout life . . . He is the One we can depend on, trust, and feel secure with, in all aspects of our lives . . . He is the Rock of peace.
So, a rock—not a stone that you can pick up, but a ROCK—a huge, heavy, immovable, hard, solid stone.
If the Lord is described as a rock, what does that say about Him? . . . His presence is huge in our lives . . . He is an immovable and solid foundation for us to build our lives on . . . He does not change . . . He is always who He is.
As our eternal God, He is never-ending, never stopping, always consistent, always the same . . . He is fully today who He was at the beginning of time . . . All of His qualities are still the same and not one has weakened in any way . . . His love, grace, peace, strength, forgiveness, mercy, and more still flourish toward us . . . His wisdom and power have not diminished no matter what is happening in the world . . . And, though kingdoms and circumstance change from day to day, God is still the same God and totally in control.
The "Rock of Peace" offers a place to center yourself even when life is in turmoil . . . Fix your mind on God and trust in God rather than focusing on overwhelming circumstances . . . It’s okay to place the weight of your life on Him—He can handle it—and that produces a feeling of security and well-being, often called "perfect peace" . . . turn away from sin and negative thought patterns and instead find emotional and spiritual comfort . . . and remember, seeking peace is not passive—it is an active, ongoing effort to maintain composure and kindness, particularly in relationships.
INSIGHT . . .
“You are my rock and my safe place.
For the honor of Your name, lead me and show me the way.”
Psalm 31:3
In Scripture, the "Rock" is interpreted as Jesus Christ, or God, who provides a steadfast foundation in the midst of life's challenging ‘storms and swirling waters’ . . . In practical terms, a rock is a place to hide behind . . . Its clefts, gaps, crevices, and caves provide shelter from animals, storms, and enemies . . . A rock is also a foundation upon which we stand or build . . . It is solid and sure . . . Rocks are used to build walls and strongholds to protect those inside . . . A massive rock, like a mountain, is immovable, and it stands firm through the fiercest storms and battles.
No wonder the Lord is referred to as a rock . . . Used figuratively, this name reminds us that we can run to God when we are afraid . . . We can seek safety and security in Him . . . God is our protector and refuge from the fierce, cruel, or merciless storms of life . . . He is our savior and rescuer . . . And our God is unchanging and constant, even when everything around us is in chaos.
Christ is referred to as a rock as well . . . Paul writes in 1 Corinthians that Christ was Israel’s spiritual rock during their wanderings in the desert . . .
“All of them drank the same spiritual water.
For they drank from the spiritual rock that traveled with them,
and that rock was Christ.”
1 Corinthians 10:4
Christ is also designated as the cornerstone of the church . . . The cornerstone was the principal stone, usually placed at the corner of a structure, to guide the workers in their course . . . Once the cornerstone was in place, it became the standard for determining every measurement for the construction and everything was aligned to it . . . Just like a building’s cornerstone holds two walls together, Christ joins the church together . . . When we read that Christ is the cornerstone, it means that Jesus is our right, true foundation and whatever is built in alignment with Him will be right and true too.
What are you building your life upon . . . the Cornerstone, solid ground, or sinking sand?
What do you want to build your life upon?
Are the answers the same, or do you have some work to do?
We should be building our lives on Jesus Christ and the gospel so that our lives will align with the Lord and reflect God’s love wherever we find ourselves . . . For Jesus to be our cornerstone, it means that He is the foundation, the measuring guide—the standard by which we order and align our lives in the building of God’s kingdom . . . and Jesus is the foundation that makes our faith stronger as we walk with Him each day.
Any other foundation will fail,
but Christ is a sure and steady rock to build your life on.
(Billy Graham)
INVITATION—TO TALK WITH GOD . . .
“Together, we are his house, built on the foundation of the apostles and the prophets.
And the cornerstone is Christ Jesus himself.”
Ephesians 2:20
We need a firm foundation to stand on amidst the agitated times we live in . . . Media loves to instill fear with daily doses of negative news, social media spends an unhealthy amount of time on the attack, so we journey through life facing confusion and uncertainty . . . So, who can we trust? . . . Who can we guarantee will be honest, caring, and supportive in times of chaos?
Scripture says we can stand on Jesus as our cornerstone, rock, firm foundation . . . Taking time to talk with God, walk with Christ, and listen to the Holy Spirit helps us strengthen our faith and build our lives upon that stronghold we know to be right and true—that Rock who has no other agenda (unlike the world around us), except than He loves us no matter what.
When we feel weary from carrying heavy burdens on our hearts, He invites us to lay them at His feet and rest in His promises.
What burdens do you need to lay at the feet of the Lord today?
When we feel overwhelmed with worry, He encourages us to cast our cares on Him because He cares for us.
What is overwhelming you and making you feel weighed down? . . .
Tell God about it—let Him help you.
When we feel lonely, He promises us that He will always be with us, even to the end of the age.
Who are you missing right now in your life?
Who would you love to talk to one more time? . . .
Have that conversation with Jesus—He is listening.
When we cannot understand life’s heartbreaks and misfortunes, He assures us He will ultimately use it for His glory and our good.
What are you frustrated with, waiting for an answer that seems to take forever?
Ask God to help you get through the waiting . . .
to help you trust His plans in your life.
In his song “Cornerstone,” (after living through the pain of losing his son) Toby Mac writes these words of assurance . . .
You're the only one that I will build my life on
Through it all You remain
I'm still standing on the only rock I know
You're my cornerstone
Because He is our firm foundation, when the waves of hardship, difficulty, and adversity crash into our lives, we will remain standing if our foundation is built on Jesus.
“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me.
Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows.
But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33
ILLUMINATION . . .
Slow down for a few moments . . . find a comfortable rocking chair, sit down, and begin rocking . . . Take some deep breaths, close your eyes, and notice the rhythm of your rock . . . Do you choose “hard rock” or “soft rock”? . . . Finally choose a comfortable rhythm and focus your attention on the forward/back motion . . . Let your thoughts gently fall away as you keep your attention on and feel the motion and rhythm of your rock.
A rocking chair serves as a symbol of peace as it provides a calming, rhythmic motion that encourages relaxation, reduces stress, and nurtures mental clarity . . . The slow, steady sway acts like a "reset" button for the nervous system, helping to ease anxiety and lower physical tension . . . The gentle, repetitive movement activates the parasympathetic nervous system—the body's "rest and digest" mode—offering a soothing, meditative escape from daily anxieties, conserving energy, and reducing stress.
Think about the rocking chair as a "sanctuary space” . . . you can settle into the gentle motion and find a favorite place to read, to dream, to chat with a friend, to listen to music, to drink coffee, or to meditate . . . you can rock away stress or bad news . . . or let it encourage quiet reflection, watch a sunset or the rain . . . it can become a personal refuge . . . and it doesn’t matter if it is indoors or out . . . a rocking chair offers a timeless, simple way to introduce calmness into your daily life.
And in a rocking chair, we are not rocking on our own power alone . . . Nor are we being rocked passively . . . Gentle movement of the feet carries us backward and forward again and again . . . Like the gentle rock of a boat on a river, the rhythm helps keep our minds focused, relaxed, and open to whatever the Lord has to show us . . . so, whatever the future holds, I encourage you to “keep rocking on.”
“You will keep the man in perfect peace whose mind is kept on You,
because he trusts in You. Trust in the Lord forever.
For the Lord God is a Rock that lasts forever.”
Isaiah 26:3-4
INSPIRATION—PRAYING THROUGH MUSIC . . .
Music is powerful. As people listen to it, they can be affected. They respond.
(Ray Charles)
I encourage you to take time to listen to any or all the songs below . . . there is no right or wrong style of music—it is what speaks to you . . . listen to the melody and the lyrics and feel the response of your heart to what God wants you to hear . . . and I do understand that music doesn’t speak to everyone . . . and that is okay too.

INTO EACH DAY AHEAD . . .
Christ is the fulfillment of all God’s promises to be our rock and fortress . . . He is our true shelter and dwelling place . . . He rescued us from sin and death, united Himself to us through faith in His life, death, and resurrection, and He made us His own . . . Christ is our place of safety, our refuge, our strength, our fortress.
We don’t have to go far to seek refuge in Christ . . . His Spirit lives within us . . . The same Spirit who raised Christ from the dead is the same Spirit who encourages our weary hearts, strengthens our faith, pressures us when we sin, and transforms us more and more into the image of Christ . . . What an amazing thing to consider—when we need shelter and refuge, He is with us, near to us—just a prayer away!
Dwelling on God as the rock helps settles distracted minds . . . Knowing that Christ is our refuge and that he is always with us gives us eternal hope.
Gracious Lord, You are our Rock, our shelter, and place of safety.
You are our firm foundation. You do not change. Nothing can move you.
I thank you that in Christ, we are safe. He is our refuge and our fortress.
Nothing and no one can take us from Him. We are His, and His alone.
May these truths be our comfort and strength all the days of our lives. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
