God’s gift . . .
The Flow of Living Water
The Lord offers each of us the opportunity to be watered and feed continually—to have God be a part of our daily lives—if we accept His nurturing and care . . . Good gardeners, like our Master Gardener, continually feed and water the heart, soul, and life which grows within us, within all of God’s children, and within the Kingdom of God.
If even a day goes by in Texas without watering, the plants will shrivel . . . the effects quickly become evident if we cease to feed and water them . . . There are enough natural moisture and nutrients in the soil to keep things going for short time, but it doesn’t take long for them to suffer and the neglect becomes devastating . . . Just as water is vital for the life of plants, so is the Word of God—the Living Water—He offers for the heart of believers . . . We need water to live! . . . It’s true for the flowers in our gardens, it’s vital to basic human life, and is critical to our faith and lives as believers . . . Spending time with God every day actually prepares us for the challenges of life that can hit us like the noonday heat of the deserts of the South.
If one day goes by without a good connection with God and His Word, we can lose a fragment of hope and sensitivity to God’s Spirit within us . . . We become more irritable, tempted to sin, and spiritually sluggish . . . Without repeated exposure and knowledge of the Bible, we can forget the Truth and deviate from our Lord.
"If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink."
John 7:37
Living water is a metaphor used in the Bible to depict the spiritual sustenance and salvation that Jesus Christ offers . . . The life-giving properties of water symbolize the spiritual refreshment that comes from accepting Jesus Christ and His teachings . . . In essence, Jesus is the Living Water, providing the necessary spiritual nourishment for our souls to thrive.
INSIGHT . . .
“Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said,
rivers of living water will flow from within them.”
John 7:38
The concept of living water has deep roots in the Old Testament, where it often symbolized God’s blessing, provision, and spiritual refreshment . . . God describes Himself as “the fountain of living waters” . . . In ancient times, "living water" indicated moving, spring-fed water—like a flowing stream—rather than stagnant water sitting in a pool or clay jar . . . The prophets spoke of living waters flowing out from Jerusalem, pointing to spiritual renewal . . . Ezekiel’s vision depicts a river flowing from the temple bringing life wherever it flows.
When Jesus spoke of becoming a spring welling up to eternal life, He was fulfilling these ancient promises and revealing Himself as the source of divine life and spiritual sustenance that the prophets had foretold . . . When He spoke to the Samaritan woman at the well, He wasn’t talking about physical thirst . . . In a land where access to fresh water determined survival, Jesus offered something far more precious—an eternal source of spiritual vitality that leads to everlasting life.
Water is one of the most unique substances in the world . . . We would die without it . . . Our bodies contain more water than any other elements or chemicals . . . The natural properties of water can help us better understand who our Lord is.
First, water is self-attractive . . . Its molecules are drawn to each other to work together . . . It can penetrate and is powerful . . . Water can get into the tiniest of crevices, can seep up the narrowest cracks in rocks, then freeze and expand, breaking entire boulders in half . . . Similarly Living Water can reach the deepest, darkest places in our souls to expose and cleanse . . . There is literally no sin that God cannot find . . . No hidden place He cannot touch and renew! . . . Living Water penetrates and is powerful.
“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there.
If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans,
even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me.”
Psalm 139:7-10
Next, water is the universal solvent . . . That means it dissolves most anything—salts, sugars, other liquids, even gases . . . No other known liquid can dissolve as many substances as water can . . . Living Water can dissolve and wash away any type of sin—any thought, any action, any internal emotion . . . Living Water can cleanse any and all sin.
“But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light,
then we have fellowship with each other,
and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.”
1 John 1:7
Water naturally exists in all three states . . . gas (as in clouds), liquid, and solid (as in snow and ice) . . . It is ever-present—in the air we breathe, in our bodies, and it makes up most of our food . . . Water can endure great heat and extreme cold and still be water, never ceasing to exist . . . Living Water does not perish, fail, or go away . . . It endures everything, and it lasts . . . Jesus can meet us at any point in our lives, at any moment, because He is always with us and will never leave us.
“For God has said, ‘I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.’”
Hebrews 13:5b
Last, water is necessary for life . . . living things need water for survival . . . Living Water is necessary for a fulfilled life . . . Jesus reveals that He is the ultimate source of Living Water, the only One who can quench the deepest thirst of the soul . . . His words extend beyond our physical need for water into a spiritual reality . . . a relationship with Him brings each of us eternal life.
Feeling dried up? . . . I encourage you to realize that your spiritual life needs Living Water to survive . . . Come to the Lord daily
. . . Be in His Word . . . Talk with Him . . . And remember to daily “drink” the Living Water He offers.
“Anyone who drinks this water [from the well] will soon become thirsty again.
But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again.
It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”
John 4:13-14
INVITATION—TO TALK WITH GOD . . .
In the Bible, watering dry land is a powerful picture of God's physical and spiritual care . . . Scriptures like Isaiah 44:3 promise that God will pour water on thirsty land and streams on dry ground, meaning He brings new life, hope, and His Spirit when things feel empty or hardened.
Have you ever tried to pour water on parched, dry, hard land? . . . It runs right off, accomplishing nothing—and nothing can grow or survive there . . . Sometimes the soil needs to be broken down to be ready to absorb the water and its nutrients . . . It can be the same for the soil of our hearts . . . The heart can be hardened, dry, and parched from lack of Living Water in our lives . . . God is the great Gardener of our hearts . . . God is our Father who wants to shower blessings, but first we have to allow Him to prepare our hearts, to break down the hardness, in order to receive those blessings.
How is your heart?
What parts of your heart are hard to God?
Do you need to give it over to God and allow Him
to soften the hard soil within you?
Is your heart responsive to the presence, will, and love of God? . . . Why or why not?
It’s incredibly important to understand that God never forces His desires on us . . . He will wait patiently . . . calling, beckoning us to open our hearts fully to him . . . He’ll gently show us His love, whisper His perfect plans to us, and wait for us to trust and surrender . . . God is calling each of us to this lifestyle with Him, so that He can lead us to green pastures and still waters.
Ask God to open your heart
to feel the peace and rest that comes from encountering him.
Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the ways where you aren’t fully open to God.
Where are you afraid to fully say “yes” to God?
Where don’t you fully trust God?
Are you avoiding the guidance and presence of God? . . . Why of why not?
Don’t be afraid to confess your struggles to God . . . He already knows what they are, but is patiently waiting to talk with you so that He can help you move forward . . . Spend time resting in God’s presence and experience the newfound peace that can come from having a heart more surrendered and receptive to our Lord.
“If we confess our sins,
he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins
and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
1 John 1:9
ILLUMINATION . . .
Rainwater causes and creates a lot of things . . . some a nuisance, and others quite beautiful . . . Growing up in rainy Washington state—well, you get the idea—I was fascinated with the waterfalls that were created after a good downpour or a continuous rain shower . . . the beauty, power, noise—what an amazing creation!
Waterfalls can serve as a powerful spiritual symbol representing God's immense power, unending grace, and the continuous, rushing abundance of His divine provision and love.
Pause and think about that for a moment . . . Close your eyes and imagine watching and hearing the beauty God has created as the water falls . . . it can be as simple as a tiny trickle pouring over a few rocks or as powerful as Niagara Falls.
Prayerfully talk with God about where you need His immense power in your life right now . . . Where can you use His promised unending grace? . . . Where you could use a reminder of God’s continuous love.
Next time you need God in your life “right now” pause and think about waterfalls . . . besides the calming, continuous flow of the water, feel the cleansing fresh water working on your heart and soul and know that God is by your side.

The Holy Spirit's nourishment isn't just about spiritual survival — it's about thriving and experiencing the abundant life Jesus promised . . . The divine wellspring of Christ will never run dry, even during times of difficulty or spiritual drought . . . God’s Living Water is always available to get you through whatever you face . . . The Holy Spirit is with each of us providing power, love, and self-control even in challenging circumstances . . . giving peace that surpasses understanding to become our anchor in life's storms . . . producing joy that doesn't depend on external conditions . . . and revealing how each chapter of our journey fits into God's larger plans, helping us develop perseverance, character, and hope.
Living Water is more than a metaphor . . . It’s a call to a life filled with love, service, and deep connection with God . . . By accepting Jesus, the Living Water, we not only receive spiritual nourishment but also become channels of God’s love and grace, sharing this living water with the world.
Heavenly Father, Our souls are thirsty for more of you.
Fill us with hope, joy, and delight through Your Word.
Use it to counsel and strengthen us, to light our paths and to lead us each day.
Help us find the time to plant Your Word in our hearts and souls.—Amen!
