God’s gift . . .

You Don’t Need a Seminary Degree to Connect with God

Yes, I have a seminary degree . . . actually, two . . . but that isn’t how I first connected with God, nor how I still connect with God today . . . I work constantly on my relationship with Him—through a lot of prayer, time spent in His Word, and listening, waiting, and watching the world around me . . . and even with a few tears at times. 

Connecting with God is a personal and spiritual experience that does not require formal academic credentials, professional training, or a seminary degree . . . Faith, prayer, and a willing heart are the primary foundations for spiritual growth and a relationship with the divine . . . A relationship with God is built through prayer, reflection, and daily living rather than academic study . . . And a spiritual life is open to everyone equally, no matter what their background or schooling. 

Knowing About God is head knowledge . . . Memorizing Bible verses, historical facts, and religious rules . . . Studying theology, doctrines, and church history . . . Knowing what God can do without experiencing His presence . . . and remaining unchanged in character while only collecting information.

Knowing God is a heart connection . . . Experiencing a deep, relational bond through prayer and listening . . . Relying on God daily, trusting Him through hardship, and sensing His guidance . . . It means changing how we act, speak, and treat other people . . . And it means surrendering our own plans to live out His character and love.

Many people spend all their time seeking knowledge about God, but there is a huge difference between knowing about God and truly knowing Him . . . For many religion can become a series of rituals—attending church, singing hymns, participating in callings . . . But while these practices can be beneficial for spiritual nourishment, they can become just routine, empty of the deeper connection that our souls yearn for. 

Truly knowing God, the meaningful and perceptive kind of knowing that changes lives and hearts and souls, goes beyond intellectual understanding . . . It goes deeper, into personal experience and innermost connection . . . The difference is exemplified by comparing just attending church versus truly worshiping there in your heart and soul . . . We can go through the motions, sing the songs, and listen to the sermons, but if the heart remains untouched, the sincere spiritual connection is missing . . . lost in the rituals. 

True worship is about approaching God with an open heart . . . being ready and willing to be molded, being ready and willing to listen, and being ready and willing to act . . . The heart plays a pivotal role, and when we allow ourselves to be encircled and wrapped in God’s love and guidance, we don't just know about Him—we become intimately acquainted with Him . . . The Lord doesn’t just want us to recognize Him . . .He yearns for a deep, heart-based relationship with each one of us. 

"And I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the LORD:
and they shall be my people, and I will be their God.”
Jeremiah 24:7 

We have easy access to books, devotionals, and podcasts, a stack of notecards of scriptures to memorize, and every new title a Christian author releases . . . all great resources to help grow our faith—Right? . . . Like an A-plus Christian student, right? 

The problem comes when we let these resources take over . . . They can limit or even replace our time spent in God’s Word, our time in prayer, and time learning directly from the Source . . . God wrote the Bible to us and for us . . . It’s not only for theologians and pastors . . . or for women or men with big stages and platforms, or for those who write bestsellers . . . The Bible is for you! . . . The Bible is for me! . . . God wants us to meet with Him through praying and reading His word! 

Of course, there is still a benefit to guidance from seminary-trained leaders and teachers, but we all have minds capable of reading and understanding the Bible for ourselves . . . And if we listen and open our hearts, God will guide us . . . A seminary degree, lots of Bible studies, books and devotionals, and more have their place, but aren’t a necessity to truly know God in your heart and soul . . . The amazing promise of the Bible is that we can know God like this, personally . . . He wants us to know Him . . . because He wants us to share in His eternal life!

INSIGHT . . .

Prayer is one of the most important disciplines in the Christian faith . . . It is our connection to our Creator and Savior . . . When a believer makes it a habit to pray every day, we open our hearts and souls to the opportunity to experience connecting and communicating with God on a close, personal level.

Prayer helps us develop and grow a true relationship with God . . . 1 John 4:8 tells us, “God is love” and we can experience that love daily by speaking with Him through prayer, seeking His guidance in our lives . . . Just like our parents here on earth, our Heavenly Father wants to hear from us and talk to us . . . When we pray, He listens . . . Then He answers our prayers through thoughts, spiritual feelings, scripture, or even the actions of other people.

When we pray, we are placing ourselves in a position that shows that we really need God in our lives and we can't do life without Him
. . . God is our source of everything and without prayer connecting us to Him we lose the power to live the lives He's called us to live
. . . Prayer prevents us from slipping into the dangerous thinking that we can handle life on our own, without God . . . Prayer helps us
stay focused on God, our very source of strength and power.

But prayer goes beyond making requests and waiting for results . . .Prayer can change lives, but it doesn’t always change our circumstance . . . Many times, prayer will change our perspective and how we respond to what’s happening in our lives long before anything  actually changes . . . No matter what, we need to be in prayer daily . . . It's about connecting with God and aligning our will to His . . . and aligning our hearts to be His.

“Lord, you have explored my heart and know exactly who I am.”
Psalm 139:1

INVITATION—TO TALK WITH GOD . . .

The purpose of prayer is not necessarily to tell God how you want Him to do things . . . God has unlimited resources and we know that . . . It’s easy to want Him to simply be our benefactor, giving us whatever we ask for . . . Have you approached God like this? . . . Focused only on your own requests and then expected that He would either fulfill or deny them? . . . And being unhappy or angry with Him if you didn’t get your way?

Prayer isn’t about business contracts or deals  between us and God—"God, if you do this, I will do that”—that won’t work at all . . . Prayer is about our relationship with Him . . . Prayer is how we communicate with God, not just to God. . . . It’s about better understanding Him and His ways . . . As C.S. Lewis is often attributed as saying, “Prayer doesn’t change God. It changes me.”

Instead of trying to manipulate God with our prayers, we should talk with Him just like we’d talk with our closest friends, knowing we don’t have to pretend or perform to gain His attention . . . When we see prayer as a relationship, rather than a trade-off "this-for-that" attitude, we can get beyond what is happening in the moment and anchor ourselves to God, finding a solid foundation in His unchanging character for eternity.

God hears us, He cares, and He’s big enough to handle even our ugliest attempts at communication, so don’t stress if your prayers aren’t perfect . . . Through prayer we build a relationship with God  . . . He welcomes all of our feelings, thoughts and doubts . . . and He offers us His steady, loving presence.

Do you believe in the power of prayer?

                   Do you really want to know Him more intimately
                                   and follow Him more faithfully?

God wants us to come to Him and lay everything—our dreams, desires, struggles, anger, temptation, fear, confusion, heartache—everything at His feet . . . so that we’ll experience His love and learn His heart, opening up the way to developing the deepest, most authentic relationship we’ll ever know.

What do you need to talk with God about in an unguarded and open way?

               Where do you need His guidance to deal with life?

Prayer is powerful  . . . It can change our hearts . . . It can change the way we look at life and the world around us . . . if we’re willing to open our hearts and souls for that honest, unguarded relationship with our Lord.

‍ILLUMINATION . . .

“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.”
Colossians 4:2

Pause for a moment and turn your palms upward to God . . . Close your eyes and breathe deeply . . . Let your mind open to the whisperings of the Holy Spirit, and then talk with God about what the Spirit has placed upon your heart in this moment.

Prayer is more than asking God for help . . . It’s time spent trusting Him with every worry, hope, and need . . . When you bring your heart to God, He gives what money can’t buy—peace, strength, wisdom, and the comfort of knowing you’re never alone.

Praying to grow closer to God is a simple and honest way to ask for a deeper connection, more trust, and a quiet heart to hear His voice every day . . . It’s okay to talk honestly, sharing your true feelings, worries, and joys with Him . . . and remember to spend a few quiet moments in silence after you pray to let your mind rest in His presence.

Getting to know God more deeply doesn’t happen overnight—it takes time. . . . Getting to know Christ better is not an automatic process—it takes real effort . . . but knowing God, knowing Christ is worth it!

INTO EACH DAY AHEAD . . .

Having a relationship with God means having a personal connection built on trust, love, and communication . . . It’s less about strict rules and more about a daily walk where you talk to Him through prayer, listen through His Word, and try to live out His teachings . . . And having a seminary degree, doing every Bible study, reading every book and devotional won’t give you any satisfying answers unless you develop that honest, deep relationship getting to personally know God . . . They can help enrich your life, but they are not the solution—God is.

What were we made for? To know God.
What aim should we set ourselves in life? To know God.
What is the best thing in life, bringing more joy, delight, and contentment,
than anything else? Knowledge of God.

God invites us to seek Him . . . He shows us the road to travel . . . And He provides the spiritual nourishment for the journey . . .
But one more caveat—even this will do us little good unless we make time in our hurried, distracted lives to spend time with God, getting to know God, and following His ways.

If your heart and soul desire to know God more intimately, then the grace of God is already tugging, pulling, drawing you to Him  . . . So let your faith take control and respond by setting yourself to “seek after and pursue Him” (Matt. 6:33), because “Those who seek him with all their heart will find Him” (Jer. 29:13).

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for loving us and wanting to be close to us. We want to know You more.
Please help each of us slow down and make time for You every day.
Forgive us when we get too busy or look for peace in other places.
Open our eyes to see Your work in our lives, open our ears to hear Your truth,
and soften our hearts to follow Your way.
Draw us closer to Your side so we can feel Your love and peace.
